Knee Arthroscopy
More Information
Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery, whereby Dr. Amit looks inside the knee with an arthroscope and can perform surgery related to ligament (ACL, PCL), meniscus and cartilages.
If you have any problem related to tears of the menisci and knee ligament that is hampering your daily activity , I reshape and smooth out the damaged margin of the meniscus in case of meniscus tear or to assess and reconstruct the ligament (ACL,PCL) of knee if it is found to be broken
After giving you anaesthesia, a tourniquet is tied around the thigh, and the skin is prepared with an antibacterial solution (iodine & surgical scrub). Two small stab incisions of 5 mm are made at the front of the knee and the knee is filled with a saline solution.
Usually, one to two stitches are used. The wounds are covered with dressings and a bandage is applied.
You will be able to get up and walk around after 24 hours. The physiotherapist will see you and check your progress. Occasionally you may need walker frame.
The bandage can come off after 2 days. Out-patient physiotherapy will be arranged and an appropriate rehabilitation will be needed.
This is variable and depends really on the nature of surgery and nature of your work. After meniscus surgery, most people employed in desk jobs it will mean around 1 week off. If you perform a more manual job it may mean a little longer. You can usually drive at 2 weeks. If you undergo ligament reconstruction surgery it will at least two week off and 6 weeks time is needed to start driving.
